Our Club History

By: founder Dr William Lau

More than twelve (12) years ago, a proposition was conceived by the then Honorary Secretary of The Malaysian Institute of Personnel Management (MIPM), CTM M A Ismail to found for its members a Toastmasters Club to develop and enhance their leadership potential and communication skills.

It was M A Ismail who introduced me to a toastmasters meeting held at the Taman Indrahana Toastmaster Club (TITMC) on one Tuesday, 22 Sep 1998. As a historical record, TITMC used to meet at the premises of MIPM which was then situated at the other end and corner of Jalan Selangor. Petalling Jaya.

I was ":volunteered" to speak by the Table Topics Master during the table topic session. It was at and thorough that meeting that I decided that the Toastmasters' Educational & Leadership Development Programme was beneficial to the members of the Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management, MIHRM).

I was then the Vice-President for Membership Services of MIPM. I reported and strongly recommended to the MIPM Executive Council to form the MIPM Toastmasters Club for the benefit of our members. The Council to form the MIPM Toastmasters Club for the benefit of our members. The Council was impressed and convinced that Toastmaster Communication and Leadership Development Programme would help develop and enhance the communication and leadership skills of its members; on which basis, it granted approval to proceed with its formation.

By 30 January 1999, MIHRM Toastmasters Club was formed with some 33 charter member. Some of the principal Executive Committee members comprised the following:

1) Charter President : Dr William Lau
2) VP-Education    : Catherine Tan
3) Honorary Secretary : MA Ismail
4) Treasurer   : Lim Kah Hong

The launch of MIHRM took place on 30 January 1999 at the Armada Hotel. The dinner was graced by the then District 51 Governor, Datuk Adeline Leong and the late Division C Governor,  Woo Chee Seng.

Our sponsoring club was Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club. The sponsors of our club were President Paru and the late Div C Governor, Woo Chee Seng while mentors were Dr.Ready and Mary Vaz; both of whom worked indefatigably on guiding the burgeoning club to maturity within a short span of time.

During the first year of its existence, all the members worked seriously and extreme hard and earned against  all odds, the coveted President Distinguished Club Award form Toastmasters International. Except for two years during past twelve years receiving the Select Distinguished Club Award, MIHRM performance had been exemplary in that it was conferred the President Distinguished Club Award under the DCP Programme.

Our Club has since grown by leaps and bounds. We had help revive and transplant ailing clubs, form new clubs, form new clubs and served the District in various capacities which include inter-alias the following:

  • Area & Division Governorships
  • District Treasurer
  • District Speechcraft Chair
  • Chair for DCP
  • Chair for Distict Membership Developtment & Extension
Some of the Clubs that MIHRM that help charter on revive include but not limited to KL Sentral, Friendship, TTDI, UKAY, Satu Hati, IJM, Mid-Valley Shaklee Dynamic, IGM, UEM, UEM Academy, MAICSA, PJ Hilton, Viva Sains, Pharmaniaga, Faith TMCs.

MIHRM membership, past and present, comprise working adults form all professions and vocations which include lawyers, medical doctors, lecturers, consultants, accountants, hoteliers, engineers, teachers, managers, executive at all levels.

Thus far, three DTM awards had been conferred on our members twice on Dr William Lau in 2002 and 2004 and once on Lim Kah Hong in 2006.

The following are our Past Presidents who had brought glory to MIHRM TMC (Name of MIPM was changed to the Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management (MIHRM) in 2004):

1) Dr William Lau        1999-2001

In 2002-03, De William Lau, Past President of the Rotary Club Kuala Lumpur DiRaja, while serving as Division C Govenor of TI District 51, rallied the help of Jitra and Kulim TMCs and five Rotary Clubs in the Songkhla District to form the first Toastmasters Club in Southern Thailand. The Club was named Songkhla-Hatyai Toastmasters Club, which later become a sister club of MIHRM TMC. This was made possible through the support and assistance given by our Division T Governor and late District Governor, DTM Lilian Lau who took time off to attend the inaugural meeting. Present at the launch included the HE The Governor of Songkhla District who delivered a very encouraging speech and gave his blessing.

Many of our Club Members emerged as Champions, Runners-up at Club, Area, District and Regional in International Speech Contest. Our ATMB Stephen Fernando has been keeping the MIHRM flag fly mightily and highly throughout the Toastmasters' World by becoming champions for the past couple of years successively.

Our Club had conducted numerous speechcraft programmes to both public and private organisation, speech evaluation courses to toastmasters clubs as well as TMC demonstration workshop to many companies.

Besides, we had presented lectures on matters relating to Toastmasters at several Distinct Annual and Semi-annual Conferences.

This is just the first 12-year milestone of MIHRM achievements and contribution and it is hoped that future leaders will continue to add greater glory to its rich historical heritage.

At this juncture before we start to cut the Anniversary Cake and sing the Happy Birthday Song, let us all stand up to observe a minute silence for two of our great leaders in our then Toastmasters District 51, PDG Lilian Lau, DTM and P Div C Governor Woo Chee Seng, DTM, who had helped us in our journey but who could not be with us. Their sudden demise was a great loss to the Toastmasters World. Let us close our eyes and remain in absolute silence for 1 minute. Thank You.

The Executive Committee and I would like to wish all members of MIHRM, past and present, "A Very Happy 12th Anniversary and many Happy & Memorable Returns of the Day". On the auspicious occasion, I wish to announce and put on records that we received three congratulatory message from PDG Datuk Adeline Leong, PDG Ho Fong Ming and out Division C Governor, Shel Ling who apologised for their unavoidable absence due to prior engagements.
